in the year of punk 1977, the jams exploded onto the music scene with this seminal debut album. the raw, unfettered aggression of the bands approach was well in keeping with the spirit of the times, but the heart of their songs and sound lay in the mod movement of the mid 60s. singer/guitarist paul weller comes off like a cross between joe strummer and the young pete townshend, bashing unreservedly through slow down, one of the r&b tunes that inspired the original mods. weller extols the virtues of frenzied dancing and nonconformist youth culture over the raging three chord attack of bassist bruce foxton and drummer rick buckler. the pure punk insouciance of his words and delivery is a perfect match for the raging but hooky arrangements, which basically consisted of the band walking into the studio and blazing through their live set. rickenbacker guitars never sounded so thick, and skinny ties never seemed less geeky.

elons latest release on clink is another peak minimal groover, properly set to kick off their 2008 catalogue! these tunes are a great addition to the label, following the compelling tripped out burners from the afternoon coffee boys and camea at the end of last year. noose is a fantastic extension of these releases and will appeal to the techno, minimal and techhouse folk. elons unique sound and courageous combination of these three sub genres make him one of new yorks most interesting new producers, and he has become an established and valued contributor to this imprint.

the original mix of tape replay is nearly nine minutes long and can only be described as a journey. its the perfect transition track, able to turn minimal sets into future disco, a house set into electro-funk, a techno set into a live jam-a-thon or a rigid set of any kind (like too many these days) into something with emotional depth. for remix duties we have enlisted our favorite producers will saul & tam cooper from simple records. much like their tech-house revision of phoniques bang, recently released on dessous, here on fresh meat they have put together a subtle yet bassy response to the wow & flutter original. the track builds and builds and at about three fourths through it explodes with lush keys, rich pads and a breakdown thats executed perfectly. these gents are on point and we are more than excited to have them along for the trip.
